Jetpaw and Lionpaw were still fighting over Lionpaw's having 'protected' Jetpaw, (see Character Intro) but both were growing tired of it. They had gone hunting together, in the woodland, and had caught a few mice. Jetpaw grumbled about how all this undergrowth made her feel like a ThunderClan cat, but Lionpaw pointed out that in ShadowClan, his pelt had stuck out like a sore paw in the dark forests. They eventually made their way to the cliff to watch the sun rise over the ocean, and as light began to illuminate the territory, the sun struck against Lionpaw's pelt. He stood in a pointing stance, as if ready to chase after the rising sun, and the light glinted off his pelt as if it was made of gold. Jetpaw was once again proud to have her brother beside her, no longer angry at him. She stood beside him, her jet black fur absorbing the light from the sun so she appeared as a black hole sucking up the sunlight. The she-cat purred, letting Lionpaw know everything was okay again, and the golden tom swung his head around to lick her between her ears. She would have snapped at him, but this moment was too perfect; things like this didn't happen often, and Jetpaw would like to think that Pantherheart smiled on them in times like this.

"Did you guys catch anything?" called Hollowecho, bounding up the slope towards them. He stopped too, and admired the beauty of the rising sun. The sky glowed with shades of gold, with soft tinges of pale pink and creamy orange. He almost could feel it reaching out to him, beginning to warm his pelt and making his heart soar. It brought contangious joy, watching a sunrise. "Beautiful and awesome do it no justice..."

(Sun is rising.)
Lionpaw looked over as Hollowecho approached. "We caught a few mice, they're buried in the forest by that three-topped oak." Jetpaw didn't say anything, she didn't really feel the need to.

(darn it.)
(fixed it. YAY!)
"Good, very good. Ready to attack the beach? We can start with chasing a few seagulls. It will warm us up and wake them birds up as well! Maybe the water will be a little warmer around noon." He glanced at their pelts, assessing them. His own fur was sleek and shining, from the fish, and water ran right off it. If they wanted to make it out here, they would have to adapt themselves or freeze each time they went fishing and face the potential danger of getting a cold.

(Okay, I will go.)
Jetpaw nodded, and started down the slope towards Hollowecho. Lionpaw followed, his larger paws sending a few stray pebbles skidding down the hill.

Hollowecho watched Lionpaw descend the path, and mewed, "By the way, I never asked. About how old are apprenticed when they're made into warriors? I got my name as soon as I joined. But I doubt you have to be as old as me to get it, or at least I certainly hope not!"

Lionpaw chuckled. "No, of course not. Most get their names around twelve or thirteen moons, but if a sickness or a wound or something interferes with training, it will be later."

"Hmmm, I see. And... how old are you guys?" he wondered innocently. "I don't know about this warrior business, but you two are as good as any full grown cat I've met. You can feed yourselves and hold you own against an enemy. As a loner, those skills mean you don't need your mother to take care of you anymore, that is, if she stuck around that long." His words might have been a bit harsh, but it was true. 12 moons seemed a long time, 6 moons of training. They had to wait at least six moons to be apprenticed! As soon as a kit could see and walk straight, its mother began teaching it how to survive. He liked the Clan ways, but they made life seem so easy and sheltered... His mother and father, and even his two siblings had been long gone before his 12th moon.

"We're eight moons, but we've only been apprenticed for one," Jetpaw put in. "When we were born, we were in the same birth sac. The medicine cat thought we wouldn't survive, but the other queens took care of us and we became healthy and strong. Our mother didn't make it." Lionpaw nodded solemnly. "Stonestar wanted to make sure we were fully ready to take on rigorous training before giving us our names." Jetpaw sighed. "We could have started at six, but it was Stonestar's decision. We learned from the older apprentices and younger warriors, though, so we had a bit of a head start." Lionpaw interrupted his sister, thinking about what Hollowecho had said about the life of a loner. "But of course, loners don't have a code to follow. Mentors wait until their apprentices are mature enough to bring honor to the Clan before they consider making them warriors."

"I like the sound of all that. Trust me, it beats loner life. Better in the end, and more enjoyable. Its kind of nice hanging around so many cats, but I'll admit, takes a bit getting used to. And look at you two know, I'd have never know it. You're as strong and healthy as any cat in the Clan. Oh, but I'm sorry about your mother... I can truly relate there. And this Stonestar guy sounded like he knew was he was doing... I wasn't born by the warrior code, and though it sounds nice, it isn't a stone wall to me like it is to some of you warriors. Sometimes change is for the better."

Jetpaw nodded. "There are always the warriors who leave. We had this warrior from WindClan, Yellowstripe, who followed his mate over to ShadowClan. His brother followed him. They're still with WindClan and ThunderClan, I think."

"It must be hard, you know, being FORCED to be loyal. I respect TideClan for what it is, and I chose to be loyal and join. I want to be as good a warrior as I can be, and if that means following this strange code of yours, I will. But being born in a Clan, well, it seems so much is expected of you. I wouldn't want that pressure."

Jetpaw shrugged. "When you're born into it, it's different. You want to be the best warrior you can be."
Lionpaw nodded. "There are some exceptions to every rule. Some just don't fit and leave."
Jetpaw interrupted, finishing, "And then there are those who are too loyal. They get too ambitious, too proud. They--"
Lionpaw gave her a look and interrupted right back: "--try to take over the Clan, make it the leader of all four, or two now I guess, back in the forest."
Jetpaw glared at her brother and added, "But it'd be hard to do here. There's only one Clan."

"Then I guess that's sort of my handicap, when you put it like that. Oh well, I'm still not going anywhere. I'll just do my best, I suppose." Hollowecho looked from Lionpaw to his sibling and back. He wasn't quite sure what they were going on about. Did this have to do with Stonestar? "Isn't it better to have just one Clan in a place? No fights over borders or prey. It all belongs to the only cats who live there."
