"So are you digging this Clan stuff? Are you in for life?" Hollowecho mewed, his gaze serious. The gray tom had been thinking about it himself, and was curious about his friend's own thoughts. Lightningstrike didn't share them so easily - they had to be worked out of him.

"Digging them? No. Staying for life? I think so." The tom nudged the pile with his paw and found a fat squirrel. Gripping it in his jaws, he moved over toward the warriors' den, then lay and began to chew.

"Why are you staying if you aren't really happy?" Hollowecho asked, then paused to reflect his own feelings. "I think I'm happy. Or rather, I WANT to be happy. This just doesn't feel permenant yet. We haven't been fully accepted yet, it just seems... temporarily. Things are different, but not necessarily bad. I just need to get used to them. But if TideClan no longer needs us, well... what if they want us to leave? What if they expect us to?" He had just said his deepest fear: The Clan would outgrow them and no longer need them, and abandon them. He wasn't sure he could merge back into loner life now.

Lightningstrike blinked at him. "I said that wrong, I guess. It isn't my greatest love, this land is, but I think I need to stay. I think they need us, and I think I like being here."

"Well, honestly, Lightningstrike, I think this is as good as it's gonna get. And I think I'm okay with that. I still go swimming and eat fish and chase seagulls whenever I want!" he purred. And more seriously he added, "And when I'm old and gray I know I won't be left to starve or freeze to death, alone in a den somewhere." He wondered if he sounded selfish, but he had already said it - he was a loner, and loners only looked out for themselves. It was sad, yes, but he was trying. He felt a little better hunting for and with the other warriors. He would do his best with this warrior code. He wasn't sure he wasn't "needed", but it made him feel better. (he thinks hes selfish and doesnt like it. he wants to earn his place, and that includes a spot in the elders den someday. thats his justice, his loyalty. to earn his place through hardwork, and be paid for it in the end. He doesnt like to think he's "needed" only becuz to him that's kind of.. vain in his book. he sees thing wierd i guess lol.)

ooc; Not weird. I see his point.
bic:Lightningstrike blinked in patient reply. "There's the upside. Never getting old in the way we used to think we'd get old. I vowed never to get old when I was a kit and planned to keep that. I would throw myself into the ocean and drown myself before I got old. Too scary to think about."

"The ocean is a way of life though. I couldn't imagine using it to acheive death," mewed Hollowecho quietly. "But I can see your point. We had such interesting ideas about life when we were young, huh?" His whiskers twitched a bit at Lightningstrike's previous comment.

"Definitely," agreed Lightningstrike. "Since a season or two ago, I thought about that vow and banished it from my mind. I would become like Foam - you remember her? Whitish she-cat with a gray muzzle and those ancient amber eyes? She hunted and fought til the day she died. I was with her, until her son relieved me and sat with her. She was so weak and ancient, and she'd been losing weight, but she didn't let any cat hunt for her. She was so proud, and I wanted to be just like her." The tom shrugged, displaying that both of his thoughts of aging were off. Now, he'd never get old like that. He'd age proudly and strong, but when he needed help, he'd take it.

"Yeah, you certainly had to respect her. She was an incredible cat, would probably have made a good warrior. Although she only worried about herself, I'm not sure she'd hunt for others willingly. That retirement plan is better, at least."

Lightningstrike purred, standing and shaking. "You know, I think this is the best decision I've ever made. Joining this Clan, I mean." He meant it too - even though he always wanted to be alone, that had changed, and now he enjoyed the company of other cats.

"I know you do. I feel the same way, it's just I wish there was some way, some proof, we'll be needed moons from now when the skills of the sea are mastered and TideClan can survive on it's own. We did help it out quite a bit, after all... But when they don't need us... will they still want us? The talk about loyalty, but I'd like to see it. Maybe all I need is time. This is still new, after all. A change for the better, the best."

"I'm sure they'll still want us - more cats to hunt and fight, right?" Lightningstrike blinked at the other warrior, rolling onto his back and scratching his shoulders against the ground. "You worry too much."

Hollowecho purred, after all, it was true. But he couldn't help it. Being a former loner just justify his behavior. Noone else was there to look out or take care of you. It was every cat for himself. If someone got killed, you just kept walking by, kept your eyes on the ground before you, hoping that whatever had killed the other guy wasn't coming after you next. Very rarily did loners and rouges team up. Hollow had only seen it once, to drive out a pair of fierce foxes. He had liked it then, racing into battle beside other cats, teaming and pairing up to beat the enemy, another cat who jumped into battle just as you leaped out. Cats actually helped another. A fox had nearly torn him apart, but a calico she-cat jumped in the way and slashed the fox's eye blind. He didn't remember her name, but was eternally grateful. He tried to find her after the battle, when all the cats hunted and settled down to share prey and rest, but she was already gone. He hoped her body wasn't among the pile of dead.. Anyway, he went to sleep thinking how nice that was, just hanging and chatting and sharing with other cats, when he woke up, all the cats were gone.
Hollowecho shook his head, resurfacing from his memories. "Yeah, I guess so. I hope you're right."

ooc: Wow, that's a great description. And it kind of justifies Lightningstrike's aloofness.
bic: The tom blinked reassuringly at his friend, feeling that the more the Clan had, the more it would survive, and he figured they knew that. Lightningstrike stood, shaking, and nodded once at Hollowecho, turning to the den. He walked to his nest, laying down. He didn't know if his pal would join him, but he was ready to fall asleep.

(yeah i made that up randomly. lol but i wanted to show how hollow came to accept a group of cats, and even began to like it. now that he's in tideclan, he sort of depends on it, and fears going back to being a loner. Exile, isolation, lonliness, gah.)
Hollowecho sighed. He just had to hope Lightningstrike was right, that is faith would be enough for both of them. He trusted Flightstar, too, and she was a kind and fair leader. All his fretting had tired him out. He was such a worrier. He curled into his nest, which was a little aways from Lightningstrike's. and soon fell into a deep sleep. (er... end?)
