(sounded fancier than A date. lol)
Briarstar watched the sleek fur on her shoulders ripple as she walked. Her pelt was almost blue in the sun, she looked just like the river in cat form. Sitting outside of his den, he longed to jump to his paws and just pad up to her and ask... His pelt tingled just thinking about it...
The brown tabby tom had been wrestling with his thoughts for days, since the afternoon Bluewater and he had spent fishing. It wasn't just her lessons that he had been paying attention, too. And Redstorm, Orangeblossom, and Violetflame, all the blue she-cat's siblings, had pretty much hinted he should give it a try. But he felt like he was doing something wrong, almost. And couldn't figure out what it was. There was no rule that said leaders couldn't take mates. Rainstar had, obviously, or he wouldn't be here right now. And RiverClan and WindClan were ONE. Wasn't this what he kept telling everyone, what he trully believed with his whole heart. Even if they weren't yet, he wouldn't give up until they were, and every cat knew it. So what was the problem? She was intelligent, kind, serious, compassionate, thoughtful... and though he blushed at the thought, very attractive. (I hope all those things can relate to her in some way, lol.)
Sure, his plan AT first had been to find a former RiverClan she-cat to be his mate, to prove to every cat his plan was working, it COULD work, and he wanted it to work. But you couldn't force yourself to love someone... he had simply fallen for her. He knew it, and was finally accepting it. Now he had to stand up to it and take the next step; find out if she felt the same.
He watched her pick a piece of prey from the fresh-kill pile and sit down to eat it. Briarstar forced himself to his paws and walked in her direction. The clearing felt tiny all of a sudden, each step bringing him too close, he wasn't ready yet! But why not? Was he so scared she would reject him? But he would never know unless he gave it a shot. He took a deep breath, licked his chest fur, trying to steady himself, and stopped before her. She looked up from her fresh-kill, her blue eyes meeting his green ones.
His tongue suddenly didn't want to work. His pelt prickled as he tried to find speech, tried to get the words out. Ugh, now he would just look like an idot! But he had to say something. He would look even more foolish just turning around and running back to his den... Some leader he was. Would dash headlong into the longest, fiercest battle, but couldn't ask a she-cat of his own Clan out on a date...
She was losing interest... she didn't like him... oh no, oh no... he had lost her... hadn't he? Suddenly, he blurted out, "Bluewater, would you like to go hunting with me?"
