Rivershadow was out patrolling with Lynxpaw on Flamestreak's orders. He thought the experience would be good for both of them - Lynxpaw getting to know the territory and taking orders from another warrior and Rivershadow, taking care of an apprentice. It was going well when the white apprentice picked up a strange scent, that of a loner, and it was fresh.
"You have a good nose," praised the young warrior and Lynxpaw purred.
"Let's follow it," Rivershadow decided, leading the way. They hadn't gone far when they caught sight of the gray tom.
"Hey you!" yelled Lynxpaw. "What are you doing??"
Rivershadow closed his eyes and sighed as the cat whirled around. Way to go, Lynxpaw. Just attract attention to ourselves. What if there's more than one cat? You don't know any fighting moves yourself. I'll have to protect both of us! He unsheathed his claws, preparing himself, but there was no need. The stray took one look at Rivershadow and yowled, "Not you again!" and fled.
Rivershadow and Lynxpaw exchanged a confused glance.
"What's that all about?" the apprentice mewed, flicking her tail. Rivershadow didn't reply but darted after the loner. He had to know! The other cat was fast but Rivershadow was quicker, and younger, and knew this territory better. He sprang at the cat, knocking him over and both cats rolled down a small hill, hissing and spitting and clawing. Rivershadow pinned the cat down, but sheathed his claws. The loner looked at him confused, very confused.
"What did you mean by "not you again?" Rivershadow demanded.
"Uh, sorry, wrong cat. I thought you were someone else. She looked just like you, though."
"She?" mewed the warrior. It couldn't be her, could it? No...
"Yeah. But that was far away, near the ocean."
"What else?" mewed Rivershadow.
The loner spoke willingly. It seemed he had a good chance of getting away unscathed. "Um... She smelled like she lived with a bunch of other cats, and uh... she had kits with her!"
Rivershadow's heart dropped. It wasn't her. "Do you remember her name?"
"Now you're pushing it... um. Her oldest kit, a dark silver tom-kit, he pounced on me you see while I was napping in an old hollow. She came along and clawed me good, I didn't even touch her kit! She said I was tresspassing TideClan territory, whatever that is. See that scar there?"
"TideClan? What's that?" mewed Rivershadow, confused.
"I dunno, but... oh! I remember her name. A little tortoiseshell called her... Swiftwater."
"It is her!" exclaimed Rivershadow. "She's alive! And she has... more kits?"
He stepped back, realizing the loner who jumped to his feet and licked his ruffled shoulder fur. "You know her?"
"Yes, I do. Swiftwater is my mother."
