"You can be someone's mate," replied Aspenfeather, amused. She stared at the leader, eyes wide.

Briarstar looked a bit shocked. "Oh, well... um..." He hadn't really thought of THAT. But now that she mentioned it. If he were to pick a mate, it would probably be a RiverClan she-cat, to prove the Clan really WAS united, and this was allowed. But then he realized how silly that was. You can't just PICK a mate. You can't pick who you fall in love with. Love? That sounded wierd too. He couldn't picture being in love with another cat, or a cat loving him... But he thought of something else. "Aspenfeather, do you think Redstorm was a good decision for deputy?" he mewed suddenly. "He's a brave, intelligent and noble warrior, worthy of being leader someday, but do you think the Clan would have felt better if I had picked a RiverClan cat instead? To prove I really and truly believe we can be one Clan?"

Aspenfeather paused, blinking slowly. "Or a father," she muttered under her breath, before he asked the question. "Redstorm was an excellent choice for deputy, Briarstar. He was courageous and had all the qualities of a good future leader. Despite the fact that maybe they'd be a bit more convinced of unity if the deputy was RiverClan, you need to weigh qualities of the RiverClan and WindClan cats. I mean, who all came over? Darksight is blind. Whiteflower doesn't have the disposition to be deputy, and you know as well as I do, even if the rest of the cats of WindClan don't, that she can't hear out of one ear. Rosethorn is in the nursery with kits. Bluewater doesn't have the thoughts, does she? Besides, she left WindClan once - would the others believe her loyalty now? The Clan has to trust the deputy - both Clans - and has Emberheart even had an apprentice yet? Has Bluewater?" Her voice was measured and careful, but she believed in her words.

(lol he might consider that an insult about bluewater, however, he doesnt notice her yet.) Briarstar smiled at Halopaw, and turned back to Aspenfeather. He let out a sigh of relief. "I'm glad you agree. After you spelled it all out for me, I KNOW I made the right decision, and if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. Thank you, Aspenfeather, Halopaw." (ugh but if something happened to redstorm he's excuse me for this - screwed. lol he's done for then._)

"The Clan is lucky to have you and your skills. I am very grateful to have you as my medicine cat," purred Briarstar. "I would be lost without you. And Halopaw, you have a great mentor."

Aspenfeather shot a glance at Briarstar, wondering. "Well, we've got borage, and this horsetail is about enough. You could get us more moss, if you want."

"At least I know what THAT looks like," chuckled Briarstar. "Fine, then. If you guys wanna go on ahead, I'll catch up in a bit."

Aspenfeather blinked at him, turning to the borage and grabbing the pile gently in her jaws. She flicked her tail at Halopaw, indicating for her to take the horsetail.

Briarstar bounded away to the wood patch, where the moss grew lush and abundant. You don't realize how important moss is to a Clan... bedding, water... (Firestar pointed that out in Firesta'rs Quest..)
