Silverspring huddled behind a gorse bush, shivering in the cold. It was the dead of night and the moon shone over head, a little less than full. She hadn't seen HIM since being made a warrior, and couldn't wait to tell him all about it. She felt the usual guilt had sneaking behind her Clanmates' backs, but it was less and less with each visit, replaced by a lighter, warmer feeling. He made it feel better, made HER feel better. She could tell him anything, and he never judged her, never criticized her. He only saw her for what she was, what she was worth. He made her feel special, warm and fuzzy inside. There were no rules when she was with him, he warrior code temporarily forgotten, washed away by his deep emerald gaze. He had pulled her in and she never wanted to leave... When the sky turned gray, she had to force herself to pull away, to break free. Sadness filled her heart at their parting, and all she could think of was their next meeting. Then when she returned to camp, her guilt, the rules, it all came rushing back to her, but his scent, his image, were all there, in the back of her mind.
She felt even worse this time, though. It was obvious Olivenose cared for her, REALLY cared for her. They were best friends, but she didn't feel anything more. She wished she did, wished she could feel the way she did about Basil for Olivenose, but it just wasn't meant to be. She was under Basil's spell, and was content and blissful there.
His white fur gleamed in the night, but the first thing she noticed was his eyes, it was always his eyes.
"Hello, my sweet Silverpaw. I've missed you," he called in that calm, deep voice of his. She rushed to meet him, and the two brushed muzzles. When he came to visit, it was all about her. He only wanted to her how she was, what she did. His days were meaningless except for her visits.
"I've been made a warrior!" she burst out. "I'm Silverspring now!"
"Such a beautiful name for a beautiful cat," Basil murmered, touching his nose to hers for a brief second that ended all too quickly. "Congrads."
"Thanks," mumbled Silverspring, blushing. "Briarstar announced it at the gathering. Were you there?"
"No, but I wish I had been. Maybe I could have seen you sooner. But I didn't want us to get caught."
"I don't care anymore!" she suddenly exclaimed, blue eyes glinting fiercely.
"What do you mean?" Basil mewed, stepping back to look her straight in the eyes.
"I mean, I don't care if Briarstar or my Clanmates find out. There's nothing wrong with our friendship..."
"Except I think it's more than just friendship now," Basil mewed warmly, whiskers twitching in amusement. But it didn't spread to his eyes, which were instead filled with some other emotion.
Silverspring lifted her chin, touching her nose to his for as long as felt long, until she was content. "I love you, Basil," she murmered.
Basil swept her close with his plumy tail, their scents, their fur, their hearts intertwined. "As I love you my dear Silverspring. Will you be my mate?"
Silverspring leaned back, her blue eyes shining. "You mean it? Oh, of course I will Basil! And we'll be together forever! Does this mean you'll..."
Basil shook his head regretfully, wincing at the pain in her eyes. "The warrior's life is not for me, love. But I can see it is for you. We will make this relationship work, it has to. Love always finds a way. We can still see each other like we do now, every now and then. Things don't have to change that much."
"But I want to be with you always," sighed Silverspring. "But alright, you're right. We'll make this work..."
