"SO you're saying she's stubborn and sneaky. I kind of guessed this," he purred. Bluewater was unique, though, that was for sure... "I have a question," Briarstar mewed suddenly. "This is a bit... awkward to ask, but I kind of discussed it with Aspenfeather and now I want to ask you. Is it wrong to... pick a mate based on where they come from?" He shifted from one paw to the other, clearly embarrassed and uncomfortable.

(I adjusted Briarstar's age. A bit young for my liking, but I didn't want him to be too much older than her. Old enough to have seen her be born into WindClan and then leave it for RiverClan. Besides, Fireheart was pretty darn young too, and well... good enough lol.)

Redstorm frowned, thinking of the young shecat he'd chased off. "I think you should choose a mate based on your feelings," he mused. "You can't just choose one because it's good for appearances, because it's not real."

"I know that!" grumbled Briarstar. "But right now I just can't picture it, this love stuff. It sounds so... silly until you feel it for real I guess. I want it to be real, er, if I ever find one, but what if the Clan thinks I'm biased?"

Redstorm shook his head. "WindClan is truly yours, Briarstar. You're the son of Rainstar, the greatest leader in WindClan since Windstar herself. You are fiercely beloved by everyone in this Clan, and they will follow you regardless of what you do."

Briarstar groaned. "When you put it like that, ugh, now you're pressuring me." But he shook himself. "No, it's alright. I understand what you're saying. I hope you're right... but I've always trusted you, Redstorm. You've never lied to me before, and you always were right in the end." This was so wierd. One of Briarstar's most pressing matters was... a mate. It seemed almost silly, but everything he did would affect the Clan, and he couldn't risk endangering the fragile peace his CLan had found, the delicate agreement they had to join together and be one.

"Thank you, Briarstar. I try to give the truest thoughts I can, and that's my advice on this. Do what your heart tells you and pay no mind to politics."

Briarstar nodded. This was all assuming a she-cat was out there. He would cross those stepping stones when he got to them. "And I thank you for that, Redstorm. I couldn't haven chosen a better cat to serve as WindClan deputy."

Redstorm ducked his head, licking the puffy fur on his chest. "Thank you. For your trust in me, I mean." I hope it's well founded. The image of the brown she-cat he'd chased away stuck in his mind.

Briarstar nodded. "You're welcome. Well, I'm sorry to run, but I should be getting back to camp. You took care of the day's patrols, right? Enjoy the nice day while it lasts. I can sense a snowstorm coming. The air's tingling."

Redstorm nodded. "I did that all this morning when the dawn patrol left. I can feel it too: my fur's puffier than normal." He stood, shaking himself. His gaze was drawn back towards the border, to where the she-cat had disappeared. Was she still out there? "I'd better go check, just to make sure," he mumbled to himself.

"Check what? The patrols you mean?" Briarstar looked confused. "I'm going back, I'll do it for you. Sorry I asked, I should know better. You've never let us down yet, and I know you never will." He had a lot of faith in Redstorm, and knew he couldn't reach his goal, the dream of truly uniting his Clan, without him. He turned, poised to leave.

"No, the border. If one rogue got across, there might be more," Redstorm said absently, then remembered Briarstar was still there. "Thanks, though. I do my best." He nodded and took his leave, padding off again, towards the forest where the moor ended.

Briarstar nodded, his ears twitching. Redstorm was acting a bit odd today. Maybe he just had a lot on his mind, the new sometimes overwhelming duties of being Clan deputy. He had been there, and understood what the reddish tom was going through. He sympathized. With a flick of his tail, he set off across the moors back home.
